ART - KAJ

The weekend of the 10/11th March we spent in Antwerp with our son, Matthew and his family. They have some friends in The Netherlands who have a son Kaj aged eighteen months. Kaj has Neuroblastoma childhood cancer with metastases. This is a rare disease that affects approximately 25 children in the Netherlands. The survival rates are low, ultimately only 5 out of these 25 children will survive.

Kai is receiving treatment in the Sophia Children's hospital to try overcome this severe form of childhood cancer: intensive chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and stem cell transplantation.

Recently a new therapy has been developed in the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia which increases the cure rate significantly by 20%!

For this follow-up treatment the family will move to America for a half year after his last chemo at the end May 2012. To make this financially possible their friends and family members have set-up the foundation “Chance for Kaj”, the foundation has set itself the goal to generate funds to cover costs arising from treatment of Kaj in Philadelphia and the travel and subsistence expenses for Kaj and his parents. You can read more about Kai and the Foundation at this site: www.KansVoorKaj.com. You will find it is written in Dutch but if you click on translation:en-US you get an English version - of sorts.

My two granddaughters, Bo (7) and Tess (5) decided to help raise funds by having an art exhibition. They asked all their friends at school to get drawing and painting. It was hoped to sell the work on display.

Here are some photos of some of the work in progress by my family and some of the results of their classmates.

The art work was originally going to be displayed in their own home but when the director of  the Design Centre in Antwerp heard of the scheme she offered the use of one the rooms in the centre. The exhibition was held today (Sunday 18th March) and was a great success. They raised the grand total of 630€.

If you explore the site, under the heading 'Actions' you can read further details about the Art exhibition.

I wish little Kaj all the luck in the world, dear boy. A wonderful idea of your two granddaughters to help raise funds for that Art Exhibition. Pleased to hear it was a great success in raising that grand total.

Lovely Art Work, you can see so much thought and children's expression has gone into those paintings.

Ah, you have blogged. Well this is amazing and so typical of your multi-talented family. Maybe we could devote the garden reading in the summer to raising funds for this good cause.
